Back to basics: Understanding schools regulation
21 October 2026
The ESB plays an important role in supporting safe, high-quality education for children and young people across South Australia. While school registration is often the most visible part of our work, schools regulation is much broader than that.
What does schools regulation do?
Schools regulation is responsible for:
- registering new schools
- assessing changes to existing registrations
- undertaking registration reviews
- overseeing Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) registered schools
- regulating student exchange organisations and programs
- receiving and assessing complaints about schools, in accordance with our School Complaints Policy.
- monitoring compliance with registration requirements and standards.
The standards
All schools registered in South Australia are assessed against the Standards for Registration and Review of Registration of Schools in South Australia. These standards provide the framework for both registration and ongoing review.
