VET in schools for overseas students

06 July 2020

The Department for Education, Skills and Employment recently provided schools with Guiding principles for VET in schools delivered to overseas students.

It offers information to schools registered on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) about this topic.

International students are entitled to the same choices as domestic students in structuring their school studies. This includes the opportunity to include VET courses in their SACE.

Where the school is a registered training organisation (RTO):

  • the school may deliver VET components to overseas full-fee-paying students under its CRICOS registration if the components contribute towards the SACE.

Where the school is not an RTO:

  • it may engage an RTO to deliver the VET component of the SACE to overseas full-fee-paying students, either at the school or a separate location.

However, the school is responsible for ensuring it has policies and procedures that ensure the safety of students at all times. This is to meet the requirements of Standard 3.2 of the Standards for registration and review of registration of schools in South Australia.

Where the VET components are not included in the SACE:

  • overseas full-fee paying students must only study this component with an RTO who is registered on CRICOS to deliver that course at the relevant location.
