Government investment in preschool funding
The Australian Government has announced a four-year $2 billion commitment from 2021–22 to fund at least 15 hours of preschool each week per child.
This is for 600 hours per year for children in the year before they start school. It covers the 2022 to 2025 school years. Ongoing funding will be provided after this.
The commitment to ongoing funding is subject to state and territory governments agreeing to reforms to increase participation and school readiness.
The reforms include ensuring every child in an approved preschool program sees the full benefit of Australian Government funding (around $1340 per child in 2022) regardless of the setting.
The Australian Government will seek state agreement to develop attendance targets to implement in 2024 and to develop an outcomes measure for trial from 2025.
Negotiations are underway with the Australian Government and states and territories on an agreement to be in place by the end of 2021.
Further information will be available from the South Australian Department for Education.
