Change to working with children checks

1 April 2019

Stronger, nationally consistent screening laws for people wanting to work or volunteer with children in SA start on 1 July 2019.

These new laws are relevant to schools and education and care services.

The new laws mean people working or volunteering with children must have a valid working with children check (WWCC).

This replaces the current system where people can have either a national police check done by an employer or a Department of Human Services (DHS) screening. From 1 July 2019, a WWCC can only be issued by the DHS Screening Unit.

If you and all staff have current clearances
(from DHS or the former Department for Communities and Social Inclusion):

  • Current clearances are still recognised until they expire.
  • You do not need to do anything until it is time to renew a current check.

If you or your staff need a new clearance:

  • It will need to be a WWCC.
